July 12th, 2017     0     Posted By

Hundred gathered yesterday for the launch of Toronto’s Caribbean Carnival at Nathan Philips Square. This years festival will celebrate it’s 50th year anniversary.  The event kicked off the start of Carnival that will take place between July 17th until August 7th.

Caribana was started in 1967 as part of Canada’s 100th birthday. It was a gift from Toronto’s Caribbean community for the centennial birthday. Now it is the gift that keeps on giving, as Caribana returns every year, growing bigger and bigger. Carnival has grown into a multimillion-dollar event and has solidified itself as one of Toronto’s major cultural attractions and Canada’s largest cultural attractions. It draws in over 1 million people each year and a budget of over $2 million. It began with only 50,000 and a $50,000 budget.

Caribana 2017 is one of the most anticipated events of the summer in Toronto. Join in for a rowdy celebration of all things Caribbean! Get ready to whine your way in the biggest Caribana celebration yet! About 10,000 masqueraders and 11 bands are expected to participate in the parade this year, which will take place Saturday, August 5th 2017. The grand parade starts at the Exhibition Grounds, but many other events, including the brand new Junior King and Queen Showcase, and a number of art shows and exhibits, will take place during the next three weeks of Carnival.
