2015 has been quite the year for 29 year old soca star, Olatunji Yearwood. Prior to this year, he was known for a few soca hits but it wasn’t until he released his hit “Ola” and won the Groovy Monarch with the addictive and catchy tune. Born to parents Edward Yearwood, a well -known composer and mother Mairoon Ali, a local actress, radio personality and teacher it was evident that Olatunji or “Ola” as he is widely known, would be a talent to be reckoned with.

His musical journey began in n 2002 at the age of 16, when he entered the Junior Calypso competition arena where he would place 2nd in the NYAC Emancipation Competition and 2nd in the Sunshine Snacks Junior Calypso Competition. 2003 saw continued success ashe placed in every competition he entered, placing 1st in the Sunshine Snack Junior Calypso Monarch and 3rd in Scouting for Talent” receiving special awards for the “Most Outstanding Calypsonian” and “Most Promising Act”. He would only get better from there.

At this year’s Digicel Groovy Soca Monarch, all his hard work paid off. Dressed in a golden suit and hat and seated on a throne of shimmering gold, he began his performance exuding a confidence that would make him the unequivocal winner of the competition. Before Yearwood even began his performance, the crowd at the Hasely Crawford stadium began chanting his name, a compliment only one other artiste in the competition, Destra Garcia, received.

Yearwood, who many said faced stiff competition from artistes with hugely popular songs throughout the Carnival season, easily took command of the stage and delivered a performance that was high energy, entertaining and filled with dance routines which thrilled the crowd and left them shouting his name.
