So you want to play mas, eh?

July 4th, 2014     1     Posted By

Are you interested in joining the 15,000 people that played mas last year? We’ve gotten quite a few comments and emails asking how you can be in the annual Caribana Grand Parade, and the answers to your questions are all below – choose a mas band, pick a costume and get ready to wine your way in the Grand Parade.

After months of preparation, masqueraders in colourful, striking costumes and steel pan bands wine their way from Exhibition Place along Lakeshore Boulevard for a 3.5 kilometre stretch taking 4-5 hours to complete. The annual Caribana Grand Parade that takes place is comprised of several mas band; to play mas (or be in the parade) check out the different mas bands listed here. The mas bands are either small or large, the costumes form different sections that reflect that individual band’s theme this year.

Themes this year range from The Nest to Festivals of Nations and everything in between. However the costume selection diminishes fast as we get closer to the day of the parade. So once you decide which band you want to play mas in – head to the camp ( or online ) and purchase your costume. Prices range from $165 for backline costumes to $1000 for the more elaborate ultra frontline costumes.

Once you’ve made your purchase with a mas band, they’ll email you when the costume is ready for pick-up; usually a few days before the parade giving you time to make any necessary adjustments.

We hope this clarified any questions you had about playing mas, let us know if we forgot any details. We look forward to seeing you all wine this year at Caribana 2016.
