With the official launch of the Toronto Caribbean Carnival being held last week, the three week cultural celebration is well underway! One event that is a delight to attend is the Junior Carnival Parade. This year the Junior Carnival parade presented by Chevrolet and Family Day event was held at Downsview Park. Thousands of children participated in this year’s event, which included the annual parade, free showcase of live entertainment and fun activities for the children, families and spectators to enjoy.
The Junior Carnival parade began at 11:00 am, with the procession of bands beginning at William Baker Park, making their way along the parade route to the stage area. Once at the stage, it was the kiddies’ time to shine, as the masqueraders displayed their costumes for the judges. The sight of children smiling, jumping, waving and wining, was a true illustration that the celebration of Caribbean culture is enjoyed by the young and young at heart.
After crossing the stage, each band proceeded down the remainder of the parade route for one last jump up, with the children smiling for pictures, enjoying snacks and frozen treats. Once the parade was completed, the Family Day festivities continued in Downsview Park. Within the park a midway had many with fun rides and bouncy castles for the children to enjoy. A live showcase of performances from steel bands, dancers and singers added to the many sights and sounds that one could see during the day event. Unique to past years, the incorporation of a Junior Calypso Showcase sponsored by Ontario Calypso Performers Association was a great new addition to this year’s festivities. In addition to the entertainment, a variety of food options were available. Vendors were selling items such as fresh lemonade, coconut water, corn, frozen yogurt, and of course delicious Caribbean cuisine! Overall, we had a great time at the Junior Carnival and Family Day event!
