Carnival season is in full swing in Toronto! For the past few months, mas camps have been premiering their costumes for Scotiabank Toronto Caribbean Carnival, aka Caribana 2K13. To date almost every major band has showcased their goods, so we’re going to give you a who, what, where, when and why – of Toronto’s Mas Bands!
Celebrating 30 years this carnival season, Saldenah is truly a family affair. Passed trough the generations, this band is now run by the legendary Louis Saldenah’s three sons.
This year, their theme is Heaven & Earth. Thirty years in the mas business is evident in there costuming with details that are second to none. Placing second in 2012, Saldenah is sure to represent after 30 amazing years celebrating Toronto carnival.
Reigning Band of the Year, Carnival Nationz, debut their theme for carnival titled, The Reef. The costumes are an infusion of colour that represent the flora and fauna of an underwater oasis. CNz always comes correct with their costumes since they debuted seven years ago. As one of the youngest and most innovative mas camps, they are always a contender for best band!
Established in 2007, Tribal Knights has steadily been establishing itself as a band on the cusp! Founded by Dexter Seusahai, this year their theme is The Beauty of Nature. With the requisite feathers and beading, Tribal Knights costumes go beyond whats expected and his theme is always easily seen and interpreted in his presentation.
